About the Owner…
Brent Mazan took up drumming in 2005, on his tenth birthday, at the suggestion of his childhood friend who played guitar. A year later, Brent received his first drum set, and the two started a garage band, only for the guitarist to break his arm a short time later, ending his guitar career. However, Brent continued with his drum and percussion studies, and, by the time he was in high school, found himself performing regularly with churches, community orchestras, and the Kansas City Youth Percussion Ensemble, in addition to his involvement in school marching band, concert band, and jazz band. On top of frequent performances, Brent took a great interest in learning music theory and composition, and studied independently with the middle school band director as an assistant, learning conducting, as well as some behind-the-scenes paperwork and administration.
The University of Oklahoma welcomed Brent to their music program in 2013, and he spent the next four years there pursing a Bachelor of Music in Percussion. Studying music at the university level turned Brent’s hobbies into a daily routine which consisted of music theory classes, ear training, and music history, all of which surrounded his participation in the wind symphony, the symphony orchestra, the percussion ensemble, the steel drum band, and occasionally even playing drums with the choir! Brent continued to stay involved with the community, working as a student-staff of the New Horizons band at OU, and playing with a pit orchestra back in the Kansas City area during the summers.
After graduating from the university in May of 2017, Brent moved to Greensboro, North Carolina to pursue a few career opportunities. The first was employment at C. Alan Publications, one of the premier publishers for percussion music; the second was to help open Triad Total Percussion, a non-profit percussion studio, with his former teacher, Keith Larson. Keith brought Brent on as the Director of Steel Pans, due to his experience with these instruments in college. As his interest in steel pans grew, Brent sought out the advice of steel pan builders and tuners across the country, and acquired his own set of hammers, and built a rudimentary steel pan.
Chasing after another out-of-control hobby, Brent moved to Akron, Ohio in the Fall of 2018 to pursue an apprenticeship as a steel pan builder and tuner. After several months of total immersion in the steel pan world, Brent began making his way back toward teaching, and has since worked with many of the middle and high school band programs in Northeast Ohio.
With the founding of BSM Drums LLC, Brent seeks to serve the music community by providing lessons in all aspects of percussion. As the company grows, his goal is to create community-based percussion ensembles for musicians of all levels.
